Jyotish is supposed to show us the path of our life; it is not meant for twisting the path as per our desires.

Arudha Lagna – Which one is true you?

In today’s context you are not judged by who you are, rather judged by what you have and how much you have. More money and fame you have, more successful is your birth apparently. The concept of identity, the first house in the birth chart is heavily influenced by the 7th house and the 10th house activities in todays’ world and the Arudhha lagna has become the most important identity of us.

What is Arudhha lagna?
It is our image to the outside world not the real us. Rishi Parashara had discussed about Arudhha ascendant as Arudhha Pada or Mukhya Pada which means the Principal Pada. You will find it in the Bhava Pada chapter of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and this concept was later further enriched by his disciple or student Jaimini.

Moon is the significator of Arudhha Lagna. Why moon, because Moon represents the society, the people. Arudhha represents the version of you which people see and perceive about you; it is not the real you, your projection in the society. It is the way how the world perceives you. You may be a righteous and kind person at heart, but to the outside world you may come across as a shrewd business minded person, this is your Arudhha working. Similarly, a person may be known for philanthropic deeds, but in reality may be a shrewd businessperson who is only calculating own gain. From the outside you may have money, car, house, family, but your inside may be empty. So this is Arudhha lagna.
Arudhha lagna has everything to do with materialistic world and the gains and losses associated with it. It is your apparent existence, not real and for obvious reasons in today’s world the importance of Arudhha lagna has increased enormously.

Let us first see how to find your Arudhha lagna.
Check who is the lord of your ascendant in your Rashi chart.
Check how many houses away the ascendant lord is sitting in your Rashi chart.
Count as many houses from that planet and see at which house you arrive.
The sign or rashi in that house is your Arudhha lagna.
Let me explain with an example:
Say you have Aries ascendant. Mars is the lord of your ascendant and Mars is sitting in the 3rd house of your birth chart. This means if you start counting from the ascendant Mars is placed 3 places away. Now put your finger on Mars and start counting 3 places from Mars. You will arrive at your 5th house. See the sign that is in your 5th house, it is Leo. Therefore, Leo is your Arudhha lagna.
There are certain rules of determining Arudhha Lagna if it falls in your 1st house or 7th house or by checking which house is stronger as Arudhha. To keep things simple, I am not getting in to the details of calculations. If you are interested to know, let me know in the comment section, I shall write an article explaining the calculations so all of you can go through it in detail.

Let us now see how do we create Arudhha chart and what do we see from Arudhha?
This is very simple, just consider the Aruddha lagna as your first house, and let all other planets sit in their respective signs as in the birth chart. Now see in which houses these planets are placed from Arudhha lagna. The Arudhha chart is analysed like a birth chart is analysed, but there are certain special rules.

From Arudhha we see the transits to know how it will impact our materialistic status and image in the society. The trines of the Arudhha are very important to judge all transits. For example,
Rahu’s transit through the trines from the Arudhha lagna gives materialistic gains.
Ketu’s transit through the trines can give spiritual progress.
When Saturn transits through the trines from the Arudhha Lagna, it is a time to be careful about well-being and reputation.
Again Jupiter’s transit through the Kendra houses i.e. 1, 4, 7 and 10 are considered excellent.
